Lovely Vision

Avery Booth & Madeline Olson

Avery Booth and Madeline Olson present assemblages of fragments that are as haphazardly constructed as they are logically positioned. Lovely Vision likens the encountering of barely worn lace at an estate sale to the feeling of finding a delicate leaf on the ground. Dioramas of varying dimensions frame the artists’ treasured remnants and serve as humble armatures to support dingy projections of beauty. The found object and textile adorned compositions are sparsely exhibited, recalling an experience of coming across something precious and placing it somewhere to be seen.

Operating from a particular vision of beauty and decorum, Madeline Olson’s work toes the line between emptiness and excess, often asking herself, how to decorate an empty room, or, if the pile of clothes on her floor is beautiful. She is reminded of being a kid and wanting her name to be “Crystal Sparkle Sally Barbie Olson,” attracted to combining every name she liked into one.

Madeline’s Personality Curtain is a garish attempt at capturing elegance, in the spirit of an overcrowded antique booth or clearance section of a department store. Multiple fabrics of different weights, textures, sources, and intended uses are connected via thread. Instead of being draped with starched and steamed pleats and folds, this curtain’s unwieldy and overgrown nature folds on its own weak points, exposing hidden fabrics, and falling over in the process. Moderntone, Lorain #615, and Window Scheme, depict an internal interior design-scape Madeline often creates and feels inspired by. Fascinated by the formality of display and adornment, her compositions portray abstracted and sparsely decorated architectural areas.

Avery’s curtain, much lighter in weight, is hatched together with willow fronds and tulle. The curved line of the boning-branch mimics how traditional curtains would swoop to the side. For the artist, the drapery of the material invokes emotional drapery and the dips and curves of giving yourself up to intense volatility of hormonal induced mood swings. She is reminded of being a kid and not understanding why she couldn’t be a tomboy. All at once.

Fueled by impulses to hoard and curate moments which encourage an appreciation of Beauty. Holding a place and time in your heart. Recording, and having an incredibly difficult time practicing letting go. Making sense of your surroundings by using support structures such as the temporality induced by repetitive walks and behavior. Doing the same thing over and over again in different ways. How does a building change when you pass it on the way back?

Avery Booth (Chicago, b.1997) approaches the making process through play with industrial fragments and artifacts. Rearranging, processing, adhering to some sort of nonstandard. Fueled by her compulsory behavior and impulses to hoard and align all in an attempt to make sense of. She is interested in sharing ideas and materials depicting an environment that is all that you are given and what you may take with. Small ecosystems are constructed, inquire within.
